Pronumeral

A MATHS DICTIONARY FOR KIDS

Pronoun は pro（代わり）と noun（名詞） の合成で代名詞という意味になります．同様に pronumeral は，pro（代わり）と numeral（数） の合成なので，直訳すると代数になりますが，実際は ｢variable（変数）やconstant（定数）を表すのに使われる文字」という意味で使われています．

Wiktionary英語版で，数学用語としての variable の意味は次のようになっています．

(mathematics) A quantity that may assume any one of a set of values.
(mathematics) A symbol representing a variable.

このように文字で表わされた定数も variable というなら，variable と pronumeral は同じ意味になります．例えば$y=ax^2+bx+c$なら，$a, b, c$ も $x, y$ も pronumeral ということになります．

この用語 pronumeral がなぜ意外なのかというと，Australia以外でほとんど使われていないからです．Wiktionary英語版では pronumeral が以下のように紹介されています．

Usage notes
Standard in Australian compulsory education, but rarely used outside Australia.

同僚の理系の米国人はこの用語を知りませんでした．確かにAustraliaから出版されている複数のInternational Baccalaureate（IB=国際バカロレア）の教科書にはこの pronumeral が使われていました．

IB Diploma Program（IB資格を取得するための高2～高3対象プログラム）Mathの教科書は，Australiaの3社(Haese, IBID, Pearson)と英国の2社(Oxford, Cambridge)から出版されていますが，Australiaの教科書も世界中でかなり使われていますので，この用語 pronumeral も知っておいた方がいいでしょう．
